I'd seen a few converted 404 maps on the net, but they were all "I created the map, and immediately logged off" cases.
The problem is that Minecraft creates the world as you explore... So yes, the STARTING area is correct, but the rest of the world was totally wrong.
This save was created with Beta 1.7.3 (the final version before the current world generator) using the 404 seed. I spent three in-game days just exploring on Peaceful, and made sure not to modify any tiles at all.
In the end, I drowned myself (to get back to the spawn point) and waited until dawn. I then saved the game.
