Man some people are taking this way out of context.

This would NOT be gambling in any way shape or form. If you consider this gambling think of all of the other things that would fall under that classification, local baseball leagues, meanest man contests, Nascar... I mean come on guys... you're taking this too far, this takes the fun out of running the shard, and doing things for the shard.

bad idea.

Too many bad possible outcomes:
Hackers ruling this.
Someone getting in some serious trouble (as is the case when real money and a game is involved)
Shard might get shut down.

bad idea.

Tournament

I think this would be an awsome event provided that the servers can handle the lag and there is no scripted play and no ma spam allowed. I also think that along with the cash prize the winner should recieve a bleesed clothing item of their choice specially made to identify the winner and maybe 2nd and 3rd places. Everyone loves their pixel crack after all. For those that can't play because of parents with credit card issues they have to understand that not everyone goes to Disney Land/Disney World. Some can't because of financial issues but that doesn't mean we should shut down the parks because they can't go. It's just an unfortunate part of life. This thread is to see how viable the tourney would be. I vote yes.

Sounds good to me

I think this sounds like a pretty good idea. I would be interested in taking part in such events, and i know other players who play on other shards that would come to this shard for somthing like that.

Not opposing the new tourny idea, but it just sparked an idea of my own.....Just a request to the GM's; maybe make a tourny with the same concept, except in game money to enter the event, and the first, second, and third place winners get in game money for the prize. Just and idea though =P

I think it's a good idea. I doubt hackers would be an issue. They are able to hack accounts but hacking for pvp benefits is not an issue or ppl would be bitching about it.

People getting themselves in trouble? They are responsible for their actions, not staff.

Shard wouldnt get shut down, thats just dumb. Worst outcome would probably be all the bitching and whining by certain idiots that'd lose and feel they were cheated.

As a side note, I'm a little sorry for messing up the earlier part of this thread by inciting pointless responses from the wannabe genius. Probably not that big of a deal I guess but still, got retarded fast.

real money to enter into pvp tournament where you just gonna get ingame items = a no no

this = a no no
as u pointed out it is a freeshard, which means it obviously isnt paying for its self

Because the tournament offered cash prizes and required an entry fee, Barr was charged with promoting gambling.

The main point of the issue was the effect of the dice of the game.

He found Barr innocent of promoting gambling, concluding that "backgammon is not a game of chance but a game of skill."

I love test cases, but to the point, you can see where people are coming from. And you can see the outcome. Aslong as the game is based on skill not luck (Which you will have an easy time proving) it is legal. But a common view of RPGs is they are luck based because they are not twitch based games.

I voted NO??? OMG

Sorry guys but I would have to agree with some of the other guys, it sounds a little to risky to be betting for real money in the game for legal reasons. I would be the same as having a poker tournement that everyone pays to get into and then wins a pot. But if you want to mess around with the Federal gaming commison go for it. I for one am against it because if ryan gets fined 20k for a silly pvp tournement guess where he's gonna look for money from the shard and before you know it we will all be paying 5 bucks a month to play on UO Gamers. Keep the tournies free if you want have a donation one with a huge really good in game prize that would be the smart and responsible way to do it. If you want to win money playing games online go to one of the many online casinos that are run out of the US or in a legal gambling City or zone for a reason.

As to the people with the skill not luck thing

Ok so a backgammon web site got away with it cuz it was skill not luck, But honestly lets look at it from IRL perspective since some of us are a lil lost from what goes on in the world. That Backgammon web site had to hire one hell of a lawyer to defend thier case and I am sure that it cost a pretty penny so you have many choices, make a quick 200-500 bucks on a tourniment then pay thousands to defend your case or keep it safe and promote a donation tourniment without a cash prize. If you guys really want to support UO gamers which I for one am for then you would be happy with a In game prize for a donation Tournement, and in addition everyone knows that if you won you would go donate and buy some neon hair dye or more Clothing bless deeds anyway so why not cut to the chase and just have a huge In game prize. And save yourself the legal battle of trying to prove that UO is a game of skill and not chance, plus are there not certain chance factors built in to UO like hits and misses that are done at random? Wouldn't that kinda make it a game of chance. Two 7X chars casting the same spells at the same time with no modifiers still do random damage. Just a thought.

i think you should make it where you pay on uo gold cause alot of ppl who play on here dont have access to a credit card or pay pal (i am one of those) maybe make an event for both types of winnings

it sounds too much like gambling, you could run into some federal gaming violations!!
i have worked in the gaming industry for the last 6 years, from Dealer to Pitboss, and i have just started in marketing. i have to say there are A LOT of rules you have to follow to allow the public to Gamble, including tax Claims for amount's earned and Federaly certified Identification is mandatory, and if you give out cash, you have to keep records of anyone paid bulk sums for up to 6 years. also how would you monitor who is old enough to Gamble in the first place, failure to do so is also another federal violation. Now even if you OWN an indian reservation, your are still held to these standards. aside from these issues i am in favor (as long as it won't cause the server to be shut down by the IRS, and you don't stop holding tourny's for free like you do.)

Not to be too harsh, but this type of thing happens ALL THE TIME in counter-strike, either in tourney's, LAN's, or even online events there is pay to play. So I think your flexing a lil' too much knowledge, that is not relevant to the internets. :D

while i think this is an awesome idea, people aren't *that* stupid

you'll see a max of 15 entries, so first place might be looking at ~$50 max?
