i overheard that for right now, the staff has to change passwords for us. What would be the preferred method to contact the staff about this? IRC, e-mail, or ingame?

We'll need your account name, and password, and the new password.

A family memeber may know the PW, or someone may use the same PW on more than one shard, etc.

There's no requirement to change passwords. If you WISH to, PM a staff member in-game, in IRC, or on the forums.
