Hi guys - ultranoob here! ;-)
Welcome! This shard is great, and I'm sure you'll feel right at home soon. I'll see if I can answer some of your questions.

I believe so.

- lots of options in the 'How to login' section - is there any advantage to UO Gateway & Krrios' Client over just sticking a direct connect in the config file?
Monumental difference! UO Gateway allows you to view all the other free shards available in one easy to use medium, good if you like to hop shards, but not really necessary if you're going to stick with UOGamers.
The Krrios Client, or PlayUO, is a more combat centric client. It provides options that make Player vs Player combat in UO easier and provides options like visible guard lines which can come in handy if you are a murderer and want to avoid the guards. It also has options to alert members of your party as to what spells you're casting to provide better communication and cooperation during combat.
The Razor Client provides many of the options that PlayUO provides, but excludes the more combat focused aspects in exchange for other options such as recording and playing macros, recording Razor Packet Videos so you can watch all your fights, and many more options. Overall the Razor Client provides everything you could ever need for a simplified and convenient UO with some really great perks on top of that.

Any other general tips for starting up (I've never played UO before, though have played a number of mmorpgs) much appreciated! ;-)
You'll have tons of questions, but feel free to post them in this forum and they will, more than likely, be answered in a timely and thorough fashion.
A few tips to get you started though:
Colors of Names:
There are four types of players in UO and their names correspond to their type. First are
Blues they are the innocent players, and you will begin the game as a blue. Blues make up the majority of the playerbase and are generally considered "law-abiding citizens" of the UO world.
Greys are another type. These are generally law-abiding citizens but they have strayed from the path temporarily. You can become grey by looting a corpse that is not yours or you did not kill, by attempting to steal, by attacking an innocent when you are a blue, or other "criminal" activities. If you go grey in town, there is a very high chance you will be killed by another player, and if you commit certain acts in town, i.e. stealing or killing from innocents, the guards will appear and instantly kill you.
Reds are the third type. These are the murderers, or PKs, of UO. PK means Player Killer and they are referred to as such because that is what they do, kill innocent players. Reds are not allowed in town and will be instantly killed by the guards if they enter the guardzone and someone says, "Guards", and NPCs automatically call guards when a red is near. You can become red by killing innocent players, out of town, and having them report the murder, if more than 4 players report you murdering them, you will become a red.
NPCs are the final type, these are Non-Player Characters and their names generally appear in gold. Any NPC with a gold name cannot be attacked or damaged. There are; however, blue NPCs these NPCs can be attacked and there are even some that will pay you to escort them to a certain town or dungeon. You can find out where they want to go by saying "Destination".
Common Knowledge:
Banks:
In every town you will find a bank. It's usually the building with lots of players around it, hehe, but you can ask someone in game if you can't find it and hopefully they'll show you. When you find the bank, you can access your bankbox by saying "Bank". This box is saved with the server and you can keep all your valuables in there, and you should. The bank is universal and your bankbox will be the same whether you open your bank in Trinsic or Britain.
Vendors:
Many of the NPCs in town are vendors. A vendor can teach you skills for a fee. You can single-left-click on an NPC to see the options it has to offer. Some can teach you skills, others will sell you wares. To purchase from a vendor you can use the menu by left-clicking and select "Buy" or you can say, "Vendor Buy". This will bring up a list of the items the vendor has for sale. You can also sell items in a similar way to buying, only say, "Vendor Sell", or use the menu, and select the items you wish to sell to the vendor. Certain vendors only buy and sell certain items, and teach certain skills, so be sure to look around for the right vendor.
Moongates:
Moongates are methods of travel throughout UO. At high levels of Magery you can create your own moongates and use them to create a gateway to a location you have marked with a Rune. But there are also moongates that are part of the server. They are generally close to town and if you ask someone, they will probably point you in the right direction. By stepping on the moongate you open a menu that allows you to choose which moongate elsewhere in the world you would like to travel to. Player moongates are only to the location they choose, but the world moongates are static and will always lead to the same place. Good, efficient travel.
Now for your other questions, hehe.

- which server/shard is best for newbs pls?
Hybrid. UOGamers: Hybrid has the largest playerbase, and as such, has the largest possiblity of finding someone willing to help you out. There are also more guilds on this shard and therefore you have a better chance of finding a guild to help you get on your feet and really having fun in UO.

Nope, Avatars are a staff only priviledge on the forum.

- pking - is there a pkscum-free zone? >;-) or is every server a free-for-all like public games on closed BNet used to be/are? reason I ask is, roleplaying or not, I am not partial to pkers (to say the least!); having said that, I don't even know what the penalties are in UO for dying yet lol! ;-)
Town. You will receive a message that says "You are now within the protection of the town guards," or something similar. Then you know you're safe from PKs. If you see a murderer and you're within the guardzone just say, "Guards" and the guards will poof in, quickly dispatch the foe, and poof out. There are many PKs on this shard, just think of them as very skilled monsters. If you see them, you're most likely getting attacked, though there are a few out there that won't attack if you say you're new. Or you can just stay in town and avoid the reds, hehe.
Penalties for dying are slim to none. When you are slain, you become a ghost. Everything on your person that was not blessed will remain on your corpse. It can be looted by other players, even monsters, and will eventually decay. You can be resurrected by a Healer, an Ankh, or a fellow player. When you are a ghost you're invisible to the living, but can make yourself visible by talking, which is translated into, "ooOOOOOoo OOoO" or by putting yourself into War Mode, default with the Tab key. If you join a faction and are slain by another faction member you have a temporary statloss where your skills are reduced by a third, but other than that your only concern is your loot and finding a res.
Hope that helped a bit, and like I said you can post any questions you need to on this forum and they will be answered. I can also be reached on ICQ at 41537733 if you have something specific and you can't find the answer. Also, always try the Search function, 9 times out of 10, someone has asked the question you're about to and you can find the answer by simply using Search.
