STORYLINE AND QUEST INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION
Demise offers an approach to storylines and quests much like OSI provides for the paid playerbase. The event staff is responsible for creating fantastic storylines and transforming the idea into a reality within the game. Players can spend hours moving through the storylines and quests, discoving new aspects of the game along with unraveling the mysteries of the story and in some cases, being rewarded heavily for their work. One can liken the staff created quests to the standard UO quests that exist in game like the Collector's Quest; however, a staff created quest normally is set for one person to fully complete and be rewarded.

Storylines are not disclosed on forum or in game through announcements unless the system message is pertinent to ensuring all interested have an opportunity to participate. Quests are often announced in some manner in game or on forum.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Players have asked what the difference between a storyline and a quest are. While they may seem relatively similar, there is one very big difference: a quest is a predetermined and established set of steps that must be carried out to obtain an ultimate goal. A quest is fully implemented into the game, meaning that each player can participate and can complete the quest without staff intervention or the need for additional information to be provided. A player can go from start to finish without needing staff assistance. Like a storyline, a quest tells the player a story; however, that story is implemented at its fullest.

Conversely, a storyline is a story that the staff member will slowly implement as players progress through the segments that have already been implemented. Storylines offer consequence and difference. For instance, if players fail to kill an evil orc, there is the possibility that a city may become overrun by orcs. However, if the players kill the evil orc, they have inadvertantly stopped the city invasion. While a story is created completely before implementation, as the pieces are implemented and players interact with the story, the story can actually change because of player actions.

Duration is also a difference when speaking of quests and storylines. A quest may take a long time to complete; however, the duration of how long it lasts is determined by how much time the player wishes to spend. The Alerion quest took approximately 2 months to complete while other quests may only last a day. Storylines are different in that because they reveal themselves to the players, the duration is dependent on the interest of the players and how much of a story needs to be told.

PURPOSE
The overall objective of a quest is to finish it. Every individual is exposed to the same exact clues and each person must work to complete the quest first. The reward for the individual to complete the quest first is normally rather extensive.

The purpose of a storyline reveals itself as time progresses and players move through and make decisions and assumptions about what is happening. The purpose can be resource gathering, killing enemies, scouting, gathering information, and a host of other tasks that may be presented. Unlike a quest where each step is established, the steps of a storyline may change thus causing a shift in purpose.

INSURANCE AND ITEM LOSS
Death during storylines and items is solely the responsibility of the player. Event healers are rarely provided so if the player should die, he or she is responsible for retrieving the corpse, items, and insuring armor and weapons. Staff will not replace items lost during a storyline or quest.

These two event types are meant to bring role play into the game. Role play is considered taking fiction and acting it out as if it were real life. The role play aspect is the primary reason why storylines are not pre-announced on forums. We do not see one country offering another country a 'heads up' when there will be an invasion so you will not be offered a 'heads up' with storyline events unless the story calls for it. Another aspect of real life is item loss. Please do not page and complain about losing items during an event. No on is forced to participate; therefore, your items are your responsibility to keep track of.

RE-OCCURRING CHARACTERS
The Demise RP events hosted by staff often reference or utilize characters. A majority of the characters are created for a specific storyline; however, some do exist that are present throughout Demise events. Information for these characters can be found as attachments to this message.
