ConnectUO has had some technical difficulty and because of this, the download link is down.
You do not need ConnectUO to connect to Hybrid.
This link on Joining Hybrid can get you connected without ConnectUO. Skip the ConnectUO information.

No you will need to patch the client first.
If you have a new uo download, this is done by clicking the uopatch.exe file in your uo folder. This guide on patching can assist you.
If you have played another shard which changed files in your uo folder, you will need to replace the changed files or reinstall.

The best thing you can do from this point is check out the guide section of the forum. The choice of template for a startup character is wide-ranging depending on your play style.
