The Art of Celestial Discovery

What is Astronomy?

Astronomy in Britannia is a peaceful exploration activity where adventurers use telescopes to discover and name constellations in the night sky. Unlike combat-focused activities, astronomy rewards patience, systematic exploration, and dedication.

As an astronomer, you'll explore 1000 unique constellations across four different time periods each night, becoming the permanent discoverer of any constellation you're first to find and name.

Why Pursue Astronomy?

  • Permanent legacy - your name attached to discoveries forever
  • Peaceful alternative to combat activities
  • Collectible star charts for display and trade
  • Social activity - collaborate with other astronomers
  • Unique profession opportunities

Time Windows

Astronomy can ONLY be performed at night. The sky changes throughout the night, revealing different constellations during each time period:

Early Evening 5 PM - 8 PM
Late Evening 9 PM - 11 PM
Midnight 12 AM
Early Morning 1 AM - 4 AM

⚠️ Important: During daytime hours, no stars are visible and telescopes cannot be used for astronomy.

Telescope Setup & Usage

Installation Process

  1. 1.
Lock Down: Place telescope in your house and lock it down
  2. 2.
Set Security: Configure access permissions for yourself/friends
  3. 3.
Calibration: Wait 10 minutes for automatic calibration
  4. 4.
Ready: Stand within 2 tiles and double-click to use

Coordinate System

Right Ascension (RA)
Horizontal position: 0-24
Use ← → arrows to adjust
Declination (DEC)
Vertical position: 0-90 (increments of 0.2)
Use ↑ ↓ arrows to adjust
Tip: Think of it like a grid map - RA is X-axis, DEC is Y-axis

Telescope Interface

RA: 12
DEC: 45.2

Finding Constellations

Search Strategy

  1. 1. Start at coordinates RA: 0, DEC: 0
  2. 2. Scan horizontally by incrementing RA
  3. 3. When RA reaches 24, reset to 0 and increment DEC
  4. 4. Continue until you've covered the entire grid
  5. 5. Record all discoveries in star charts
