Musicianship is the foundation of all bardic abilities in Ultima Online. This skill determines your success rate with instruments and enables the use of Provocation, Peacemaking, and Discordance. While not directly powerful on its own, musicianship is absolutely essential for any character pursuing the bardic arts.
Buy from Bard NPCs in towns for ~300 gold. Essential foundation for all barding.
Simply use instruments repeatedly:

All instruments provide the same training value and barding effectiveness. Choose based on personal preference or availability:
Musicianship + Provocation success rate formula:
(Musicianship + Provocation + 50) / 2
Higher musicianship dramatically improves provocation success against tough monsters.
Musicianship affects peacemaking area of effect and duration:
Musicianship determines discordance success rate and effect strength. GM Musicianship allows discordance to work on the toughest monsters.
Create a simple macro to use your instrument every 10-12 seconds. This allows AFK training while you do other activities. Musicianship has no failure penalty.
Since musicianship requires no movement or targeting, train while: reading skill books, waiting for resources to respawn, or socializing with other players.
Instruments are cheap and never break from training use. A single instrument can take you from 0 to GM. Total cost is under 100 gold for the instrument.
