PARRYING

"A shield in hand is worth two in the stash"

Skill Overview

Parrying is the art of defensive combat using shields to block incoming attacks. A skilled shield fighter can deflect weapon strikes, reduce damage, and even counterattack effectively. Essential for warriors who prefer defense over offense, and invaluable in both PvP and PvM situations where staying alive matters more than dealing damage.

Training Path

0-30: NPC Training

Buy from Fighter NPCs for ~300 gold. Provides solid foundation before active training.

30-50: Basic Combat Training

Fight weak monsters with shield equipped:

  • • Skeletons, zombies, mongbats
  • • Use a basic shield (buckler or wooden)
  • • Focus on getting hit, not killing quickly
  • • Wear light armor to take more hits

50-80: Intermediate Monsters

Graduate to stronger enemies:

  • • Orcs, ratmen, lizardmen
  • • Upgrade to better shields (kite, heater)
  • • Train in groups of monsters for more hits
  • • Use bandages to stay alive longer

80-100: Advanced Training

Face challenging opponents:

  • • Dread spiders, ettins, ogres
  • • Use exceptional or magic shields
  • • Practice against multiple attackers
  • • Consider player sparring for variety

💡 Pro Tip: Remove your weapon to force monsters to hit your shield more often!

Combat Mechanics

Block Chance Formula

Block Chance = (Parrying Skill + Dex) / 4
Maximum block chance is roughly 35% at GM skill with high dex.

Damage Reduction

Successfully blocked attacks deal reduced damage based on shield AR. Better shields and higher skill provide greater damage reduction.

Weapon Speed Penalty

Shields slow weapon swing speed slightly. Heavier shields have greater penalties. Consider this trade-off between offense and defense.

Durability Concerns

Shields lose durability when blocking attacks. High-durability materials last longer in extended combat situations.

Practical Applications

  • Tank Warriors: Primary defensive skill for front-line fighters
  • PvP Defense: Reduces damage from weapon attacks
  • Dungeon Crawling: Essential survival tool in dangerous areas
  • Group Combat: Allows tanking multiple enemies
  • Resource Farming: Stay alive longer while fighting spawns
  • Champion Spawns: Survive large groups of monsters

Advanced Techniques

Shield Bash

Some shields can be used as weapons. While not highly effective for damage, shield bashing can interrupt enemy spellcasting and provide tactical advantages.

Positioning

Face your enemies directly to maximize block chances. Side and rear attacks are much harder to parry. Use terrain and walls to limit attack angles.

Shield Swapping

Carry multiple shields for different situations. Use heavy shields for maximum defense, lighter shields when speed is important.
