ethnocentric: ethno - ethnicity. centric - centered. if we were a nation primarily populated by one ethnicity, then yes, it could apply to the nation. we are not, we are a "melting pot" nation. get your definitions from the dictionary, not wikipedia.

as for R&D, compare $5.6 billion to $2.7 billion spent just on free samples to market (not counting advertising) and $29 million on federal lobbying.

before you start talking about such issues, know what you are talking about before "speaking" and making an ass of yourself. it's no surprise you want me to shut up, i keep making you look like a "fucking retard" at every turn.

also, donations: 1. south africa is one of the most "developed" of african nations. why not help those in more need? charitable donations are tax write offs. novartis also spent several hundred million (almost a billion) to have corporate citizenship in south africa. look that term up if you wish, it's sort of a lost cause explaining to you that you dont know everything (especially as you see the subject matter is "boring." not enough fart jokes and pop culture references for you?)

also, lil miss moral high ground, i expect you will not be receiving any pay for your services, as you have a moral obligation to do this, yes?

Plus, the Starship Troopers shower scene was to my liking as well.

That movie will not win awards for its acting but they hit that scene spot on, some day we will all have better control over our sexual impulses and things like that will be possible.

I thought the movie was excellent. A bit silly (intentionally), but it had quite a lot going for it. At least I enjoyed it.

There are a lot of things like that that I seem to have a very different take on things than most of our lawmakers. You would have thought that the people that grew up in the 60's would have followed through with things a little differently, but maybe the people that wind up in office and in control are not the same people that I would elect. The people that I would elect actually never make it onto the ballot (with a legitimate chance anyway) which is a whole different discussion.

nah, making the ignorant learn something in an attempt to prove me wrong is something of a passion of mine. i see i have a lot of work to do. i'm not one to shirk a challenge, though.

back to the economy. you know back in the 30's and 40's you could stay at a hotel for a week on a dollar? know the price of bread has increased between 120-150% in just since the 80's? do you know the significance of the price of bread?

oh and all those "you's" are general, not specific to the quote.

Again, ethnocentric can refer to a nation ESPECIALLY the U.S. considering our dominance in the world. You are such a moron it almost hurts inside to keep calling you one.

As for South Africa being one of the most developed nations in Africa, that might be so but it also has one of the most highest if not the highest prevalence rates in the world for HIV/AIDS and one of the highest prevalence rates for TB both MDR and XTR. For being one of the most developed nations, something obviously isn't going right. Shut the fuck up already. You know absolutely nothing of what you are talking about.

As for me receiving pay for my services, why would I fly out here and live here out of my own pocket? You don't think the people who work for the U.N. don't get paid? How about Doctors Without Boarders; or better yet, the Peace Corps? Again, your stupidity astonishes me; and I am the ignorant one?

P.S. Your comments would at least be more entertaining to read if they did in fact contain fart jokes and pop culture references.

Also, UNC Chapel Hill happens to be one of the top 10 best medical schools for HIV/AIDS research you can go to in the U.S. as well as for Public Health. You are so predictable; it was only a matter of time before you started criticizing universities.

Brookly, I have heard in the past a bit about the Catholic Church spreading a lot of their dogma about not using condoms or birth control in places like Africa. In your experience have you seen any of that out there? Never been there myself, and was curious to see if someone has seen much of that first-hand, and how prevalent religious dogma plays a role in their problems. In a lot of places where there are people in a bad way, they seem to have a pretty firm grip on what the people believe.

Not that I am aware of. The only religious dogma I see out here are from traditional healers telling people that ARVs are bad and that they should stop taking them. In fact, just yesterday I had a patient come in who stopped her ARV regimen almost 2 years ago because she decided to go to a traditional healer and he asked her to stop taking her ARVs and to take this stuff called Muntu (I think is what it was called). Traditional healers make this crap made of just some herbs and advertise it as a 'cure.' The Catholic Church doesn't seem to have a huge presence in South Africa. I noticed quite a few parishes in Kenya. The thing with Africa is that a lot of the countries were colonized by different European countries so it just depends on who colonized them. The ones who were colonized by the British didn't have a heavy Catholic presence but did have other Christian congregations. In those, they actually play a huge role in health education so we use them for grassroot support. So to answer your question; I haven't seen religious dogma really preaching that. In places with a high Muslim population like North Eastern Africa you definitely see dogma having an adverse affect on Western prevention and treatment. It is hard to bridge the gap between Western medicine and the cultural/religious barrier.

Re: I LOVE YOU MISTRO

Thankyou for the reply. There are a lot of things to think about when you start getting into some of these topics. A lot of times in the past when I think about the culture in some of these places (and in the US too), I tend to get angry about things like: people having children when they know they can't or won't be able to provide for them, men knowingly or negligently infecting women with HIV, and the effect of religous dogma on people that are in a bad way. I don't really walk in the shoes of these people though, so I try to keep that in mind.

I've always felt that many people here in the US tend to forget about alot of the history of organized religion. Some of the greatest evils modern man has ever known were caught up in it, and yet people still feel the need to ignore all that in favor of the benefits of acceptance. It's something I always think about when I visit with extended family for funerals, weddings, and that sort of thing. A lot of the people that I come across that feel that they are virtuous, seem to be only when it is convenient for them. There are people that will sacrfice quite a lot to do what they feel is right, but they sometimes seem to be a very rare breed to me. Many times the strength of one's convictions is largely untested, and sort of lost or mixed in with other more practical interests.

I think maybe I should bail out before I start thinking too much about this stuff again. It was nice to hear what someone else has seen out there first-hand. The health insurance and medical billing side of the health care industry is something that I have some experience with, and there really is a lot going on (or has gone on in the past) that is very easy to get worked up about. It's a lengthy topic to get into though. I'm not sure if I could or would be an American doctor working for someone else (like a large hospital or health care provider) with the stuff that I know. I'd probably just try to do house calls despite the loss of income or try to practice somewhere else in the world. I have a lot of funny ideas about things that seem to always be at odds with the status quo. Drives me nuts sometimes.

saying "NO I'M RIGHT" does not work when you are wrong. a nation CAN be ethnocentric, if it is made up of one ethnicity primarily. i am nationalistic. discover the differences.

i guess places in the "dark heart" of africa that dont have the means to report their numbers accurately, let alone treat them, dont count compared to south africa, which last i checked had the highest percentage of internet users on the continent. for someone who has spent so much time over there, you really have no clue what you were talking about.

i did not asked if you were getting paid now, i asked if you had no plans on getting paid in the future. again, you show your limited capacity of understanding.

you brought up universities, not i, you really shouldent be surprised.

instead of calling me a nutjob, verify my information. i note that you arent touting R&D anymore, perchance did you click those links?

no, i'm shittalking her for "opening her mouth" without knowing what the fuck she's "talking" about.

from economics to how her own field operates in the real world.

she's so out of touch with reality, it honestly would not surprise me if she were to tell me obamacare is a good thing.

good idiom about all things coming at a cost. here is the price for me to shut up:

google the following terms for definitions and how they relate to the US economy today.

fractional reserve banking
inflation ('expansion of money supply'-austrian or 'rising prices'-keynesian)
public/gov. debt to gdp ratio
real-estate asset bubble
malinvestment
unfunded federal liabilities
trade deficit
protectionism
gov subsidies
us dollar index

Right, because percentage of internet users directly correlates to a healthy society. You are now just arguing for the sake of arguing and not even making any sense. The U.S. has one of the largest percentage of internet users and it has the largest population of obese people as well as diabetes. I am not going to cater to your inability to justify what the hell you are talking about.

I brought up universities? What was that snide comment about not knowing that UNC had an infectious diseases department? Considering UNC is the oldest public university in the U.S. and has always been one of the top medical research facilities in the world which clearly shows me, and obviously by your comment, that you have no idea what you are talking about. Spare me the hypocrisy.

I am not touting R&D because it is all on that website. You want to debate about R&D and the cost of drugs, shoot phrma.org an email and bring your complaints up with them.

Again, arguing for the sake of arguing.

I will be the bigger person and end this stupid debate. All you want to do is be antagonistic.

P.S. Interesting petty jab and assumption that I am a supporter of Obama and his health care reform policies. Just shows how desperate you are to start yet another stupid debate to show how opinionated you are. For a 29 year old, you sure are immature.

I was just kidding around a little. Trying to lighten things up a bit. WireZ posted a nice picture a couple days back, and at the moment, inexpensive thrills (the simple things in life) are what I can afford. I appreciate many things when I see them, and don’t really mind saying so.
