Re: Congrats America, we made History.
Something a bit interesting to think upon were what states were the "battlegrounds" in this election. What's important to see is that the lineup of states, and the margin by which they were won, points out how different, in the end, this election is from those of 2000 and 2004. Hence, when 2012 rolls around, the media would find it best to not treat the red/blue map the same, and instead respond to its differnet layout, noting where states have shifted. In this election, these states were the real "swing states," won by a margin smaller than Obama's 5.89% overall popular vote margin. In 2000 and 2004, all of them were counted for Bush:
- Missouri, (11 0.20%) - Bush '00/'04
- North Carolina, (15 0.35%) - Bush '00/'04
- Indiana, (11 0.96%) - Bush '00/'04
- Florida, (27 2.35%) - Bush '00/'04
- Montana, (3 3.49%) - Bush '00/'04
- Ohio, (20 3.92%) - Bush '00/'04
- Virginia, (13 4.50%) - Bush '00/'04
- Georgia, (15 5.47%) - Bush '00/'04
Meanwhile, these states were won by a margin smaller than 10%:
- Colorado, (9 6.78%) - Bush '00/'04
- South Dakota, (3 8.41%) - Bush '00/'04
- Arizona, (10 8.62%) - Bush '00/'04
- North Dakota, (3 8.67%) - Bush '00/'04
- Iowa, (7 9.29%) - Bush '04
These states, lastly, were supposedly battlegrounds according to some sources, but in the end the result wasn't even close, with the winner scoring a landslide of a 10% margin or higher:
- New Hampshire, (4 10.02%) - Bush '00
- Pennsylvania, (21 10.30%)
- Minnesota, (10 10.39%)
- Nevada, (5 12.50%) - Bush '00/'04
- West Virginia, (5 13.12%) - Bush '00/'04
- Wisconsin, (10 13.93%)
- New Mexico, (5 15.50%) - Bush '04
- Michigan, (17 16.60%)
- Arkansas, (6 20.03%) - Bush '00/'04
Rather interesting that there was a sizable amount of press that Pennsylvania might go for McCain, which in the end was shown to not even be a reasonable chance. Similarly, a few "battlegrounds" such as New Mexico and Nevada turned out to be false, and rumors of a possible red-to-blue switch akin to a lot of the nation in West Virginia and Arkansas turned out to be unfounded, leaving the states solidly "red."
Overall, one sees that this was a very "blue" year; Obama managed to not only take all states that either Gore or Kerry had won, (Gore had lost New Hampshire, and Kerry Iowa and New Mexico) he also managed to move a lot of traditionally "red" states into his camp; Nevada went from a 3.55% win for Bush in 2000 and a 2.59% win in 2004, to being not even a swing state, and in favor of Obama.
This all stacks up to saying that provided Obama handles the Presidency at least decency, whatever Republican comes out to face him in 2012 is going to be in for a rather tall order; neither Clinton nor Bush had ever been as sucessful as Obama in this election, yet both managed to win two terms. This time around, the election wasn't even close; Obama had 278 out of 270 electoral votes just from states he carried by >6% alone, meaning he could've conceded ALL of the blue states in the first group and still have won. Of course, 2012 will see vote re-proportioned due to the upcoming 2010 census, which may alter things a bit; swing states Virginia, North Caroline, Florida, and Georgia look to pick up a seat or two, while a few others look to lose them, which could cut against Obama's favor in 2012.

No fucking shit. Even if McCain was a heavy Bush supporter, I`m pretty sure McCain is 10x the smarter guy Bush is.
However, on the flip side, we saw how clearly that we were wrong to think that Bush was the worst possible candidate for the job. A lot of us did, and eventually nearly 3/4 of us did... Until we saw Sarah Palin arrive on the scene.

One man cannot change the Economy, Not Bush, Not McCain and especially not a socialist like Obama.
If memory serves, it took a socialist-leaning Democrat to fix the Great Depression, a man named Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Republican Herbert Hoover had more or less managed to botch his reaction to the crisis when it came in 1929, (much akin to 2008) however Roosevelt managed to start reversing the Depression within a year of him coming into office in 1933, and managed to have the US economy surging even BEFORE the attacks on Pearl Harbor at the end of 1941.
